Letter from Italy Councilman Paul Shearin

I am Paul Shearin and I sit on the council in Italy, Texas. Last night in our meeting we had a citizen speak during our citizens comments and he used language that was inappropriate and he named some names of folks before being stopped. While I do not know the man personally I still felt I needed to apologize to those who were named and the citizens of Italy.

City of Italy Official Statement: Firing Police Chief

At the regular meeting on Monday, January 9, 2017, Italy’s City Council announced the termination of Police Chief Cameron Beckham and the appointment of new Police Chief Jason Cherry. The decision to make this transition was not taken lightly. In the course of investigating a separate matter, I formed the opinion that Chief Beckham had not acted in the City’s best interest on multiple occasions. I felt that his actions were negatively impacting not only his subordinates, but also staff in other departments and ultimately the citizens of Italy. I do not wish to comment further except to say that I sincerely wish Chief Beckham the best of luck on future endeavors.

Italy City Council takes no action regarding mayor and council compensation

In a called meeting on August 12, 2016, the Italy City Council after much discussion took no action regarding City Council and Mayor compensation. Council member Henry Wortman requested this be placed on the agenda. He said that in 2009 the council had been seen in a bad light by the media when the council gave themselves and the mayor a raise. He said he felt the Mayor and Council deserved to be compensated for the job they were doing. He suggested the council reinstate this by compensation to the mayor and council members.
