George E. Scott Coliseum — With teams trying to improve their position in the standings, excitement was in the air. Performing in front of a packed gym, IYAA players put their skills on display and made their parents, grandparents and coaches proud.
Italy 9 (1st & 2nd Coed) coached by Deloris Harris, competed hard against a talented Hillsboro Purple team on Saturday. Although Hillsboro won convincingly 38-5, the “Harris Hoopsters” were all smiles before, during and after the game just excited to be playing the sport they love.
Michael Gonzalez lead the “Harris Hoopsters” with 3-points while Bryce DeBorde and Cornelius Jones each added 1-point. Destiny Harris was great on defense and Reese Janek did a masterful job dribbling the ball. Jacee Coffman didn’t hesitate to shoot the open shot while Xander Galvan was strong on the boards.
Italy 13 (3rd & 4th Girls) head coached by Derrick Cunningham and assisted by Allen Richards, were leading 6-4 after the 1st quarter and eventually won 27-16 over Italy 14, coached by Jerry Glenn.
For Italy 13, Emily Cunningham swished a 3-pointer in the 2nd and another in the 4th to finish the game with 15-points. Brycelen Richards and Jenna Holden both scored 3-points. Kirby Nelson put in 2-points while Paige Henderson, Haley Jones, Karley Nelson and Reagan Jones scored 1-point each.
Italy 14’s Grace Haight put in 11-points and Annie Perry scored 3-points. Elisha McClendon and Hannah Haight both scored 1-point each. Carlee Wafer, Virginia Stephens and Jashiryan Lacy played tenacious on defense for coach Glenn as well.
Italy 25 (5th & 6th Girls) coached by Olympia Anderson and assisted by Vincent Anderson, came from behind in the final 2 minutes to defeat Italy 24 coached by Barry Byers, 31-22.
Shercorya Chance scored 15-points, Oleshia Anderson made 4-points and Lyric Brooks made 3-points to lead the scoring for Italy 25. Taylor Henery put in 2-points while Moesha Griffin, Quintera Washington, Aarion Copeland, Kimberly Mata, Lizzie Garcia, Christy Murry and Jasmine Hernandez scored 1-point each in the win.
For Italy 24, DeCorea Green lead the way with 9-points, Hannah Washington put in 4-points and Halee Turner scored 3-points. Ashlyn Jacinto, Brooke DeBorde, Lillie Perry, Janae Robertson and Raven Harper each scored 1-point while Cassidy Childers and Jennifer McDaniel made plays on defense.
Congratulations to Italy 30 (5th & 6th Boys) on their Saturday win. “Windham’s Warriors” coached by Andrea Windham took care of business against Hillsboro Forest Green to win 34-24.
Caden Petrey and Levi McBride both scored 10-points in the winning effort. Ryan Connor scored 7-points while James Walton and David DeLaHoya both scored 3-points. Ty Windham added 1-point while Thomas Crowell and Jorge Galvan harassed Hillsboro’s shooters.
