What a difference a day can make! After a bad game last Friday the Lady Gladiators came out on Monday like they had something to prove. And prove they did! Our “Ladies” beat Waco Connally 10-4 in a pre-season contest.
Saturday, February 28th, there were many sports cars checking in at the Monolithic campus in Italy. The Monolithic Dome Cabin was the checkpoint for the cars in the Roads of Texas sports car rally.
Tuesday, March 3rd, TAKS testing was going on at Stafford Elementary. The teachers of the second graders decided to take their students out of the building to give them a day of fun while the older students took their test.
It didn’t take fans long to realize the Milford Bulldogs vs. Midway Falcons game would be a good one. From start to finish these two teams gave fans their money’s worth.
Members of the IHS Powerlifting Team, Lady Gladiators Kaytlyn Bales and Sa’Kendra Norwood, are carrying the load for Italy all the way to the State Powerlifting Meet, March 20th and 21st.
Italy Lions Club joined up with the Lone Star BBQ Society and put on a great BBQ Cook-Off at the Upchurch baseball fields Saturday in Italy. The event began on Saturday but Friday morning is when the real fun began.
Potential candidates can still pick up ballot packets for our area’s City and School elections. Although the election date will be Saturday, May 9, deadlines for filing applications to be placed on the ballots are fast approaching.
The Italy Lions Club wishes to thank everyone involved in making our 1st annual BBQ cook-off a success. We wish to extend a special thank you to all of the judges. The weather was not very cooperative but the turnout was great. We hope to make next year’s bigger and better than this year’s.
For the last several years, Italy High School has been represented by several students in the Small Schools Academic Competition. The name has changed to the Texas Association of Community Schools Academic Competition, but the new name did not make the competition any easier. This year several IHS students fared very well and earned scholarship monies.
“The Italy Gladiators Varsity team are Area Champions,” says Coach Kyle Holley. The next time to see our boys play will be Wednesday night at 7:00 pm at West High School. Italy will take on the Itasca Wampus Cats.
If you drive by the city park on College Street, you will see something very new. The local tennis courts are being refurbished, which is wonderful for the IHS tennis team.
Over forty 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from Stafford Elementary and Italy High School traveled to Wortham to participate in the A-plus Academic UIL meet on December 4 & 11. They participated as individuals and teams in events covering a wide variety of topics from math and science to speech and journalism.
The Avalon Eagles and Forestburg Longhorns battled Friday night in Springtown to keep their playoff dreams alive. After an exciting game, Avalon moves on as the Area Champions.
The Italy Gladiators buzzed past the 20-10 Menard Yellow Jackets (13A District Champs) by a score of 65-56 to claim the Area Championship making Italy’s record 22-10. Italy rematches arch nemesis, Itasca, for the Regional Quarterfinal crown on Wednesday, March 4th at 7:00 p.m. in West.
The Lady Gladiators took to the field Friday night in a non-district game against the Rice Lady Bulldogs. In these two teams’ previous game the Lady Gladiators defeated Rice 5-3. This time…not so much. The final score in this contest was 7-0 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs
Did you know the Boys Scouts of America are in Italy? It’s a small group of young men but strong in spirit. This school year they have sold popcorn, helped area churches with different programs, hosted a canned food drive for the local food pantry and have lots more ideas for the rest of the year.
Angel Food Ministries has released their March Menu. Orders must be made on Tuesday, March 10th, from 9 am until noon in Itasca. Pick up day is Saturday, March 28th, from 9-10 am. You may also order through the Baptist Church in Milford.
Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., Trinity Mission of Italy was alive with up-beat music provided by Bobbie and Sue Sparks. The residents were swaying to the music and some of them were even singing right along.
Meals-on-Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties is a proud participant of the national 2009 “March For Meals” campaign. Meals-on-Wheels’ “March For Meals” event will include an awareness media campaign of its local services in each community, the national “Mayors For Meals” delivering in their communities on Wednesday, March 19, and a benefit celebration, “A Night Under the Stars” on Saturday, March 28, kicking off the construction campaign of a new regional kitchen facility.

Italy plays the Menard Yellow Jackets on Friday, February 27th in Dublin, Texas at 7:30 p.m. – This article contains instructions to assist Gladiator Fans as everyone travels to Dublin, Texas for the Area Championship game. Also, there will be a send-off for the players at 3:00 p.m. in the High School parking lot.
Tonight, February 27th if you take a little time to look up at the sky at about sunset you will be able to see a Moon-Venus conjunction. Now, this is not an unusual event but this conjunction will have some unique qualities.
The Italy School Board approved professional contracts at a meeting held Thursday evening. They renewed contracts for an additional year for Pam Luttrull, director of special programs; Carolyn Maevers, Stafford Elementary principal; and Craig Bales, athletic director.
Italy’s Powerlifting Team competed in Riesel this past weekend. Three different Italy Powerlifters medaled: Kaytlyn Bales, Sa’Kendra Norwood and Curtis Cole.

The IYAA FINAL Baseball/Softball sign-ups are this weekend Saturday, February 28, at the Old Italy Gym between 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and also 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Upchurch Field. Please bring a birth certificate and $65.00 sign-up fee for each player.
Even though Bailey DeBorde is only in the 6th grade, she already knows what direction she would like her life to take. She plans to attend Tarleton State University in Stephenville and major in Human Sciences and become a Registered Nurse. The $10,000 scholarship she recently won at the San Antonio Stock Show will help her realize her dreams.
IYAA – It’s that time of the season when all the hard work and practice starts falling into place. Week 7 was about making that first layup in your whole life, finally getting the ball over the front of the rim to make your first free throw ever and that moment you realize you could be pretty good at this game.
Mardi Gras beads, King Cakes and lots and lots of students were all in the library at Italy High School Tuesday morning around 8:45. Everyone was there getting a slice of King Cake hoping to find a plastic baby. If they were lucky enough to find the baby in their slice of cake any library fines the student had would be dismissed.
Saturday, February 28, the “Roads of Texas” car rally will be making a stop at Monolithic Constructors in Italy. There will be approximately thirty cars driving up Dome Park Place using the Monolithic’s “Visitors Center” as a check point for the event. They will then be driving through Italy and out along Morgan Road.
Finishing in 3rd place within District 15A, the Lady Gladiators appeared in the playoffs for the 1st time since 2006 becoming Bi-District Finalist for 2009. Although young, the Lady Gladiators basketball team was loaded with talent. Enough talent in fact, that each player was selected to the All-District list. Congratulations to these “Beauties of Brawn” for their accomplishments this season.
West, Texas – The Italy Gladiators conquered Chilton and claimed the Bi-District Championship. Captain Kyle Holley and 1st Mate Larry Mayberry led their crew of Gladiators over a wave of fan support as Italy sunk the Pirates 87-73.
The Lady Gladiators made their presence known at The Classic of Ellis County softball tournament this past weekend. This tournament, sponsored by the Ellis County Umpires Association, had a total of 14 teams from all over Texas participate.
The talent for cooking must run in the Mitchell Family. Doris Mitchell owns Uptown Cafe downtown Italy, her granddaughter Amber Hudson has her own catering business, Lady Ella Catering and now Ricky Whitney’s (Doris’s grandson) sister in law Stacey Tolliver makes her own creation, “Cake Bites.”
What are the odds? On Tuesday, Feb. 24th, Saturn and Comet Lulin will converge in the constellation Leo only 2 degrees apart. At the same time, Comet Lulin will be making its closest approach to Earth—the comet at its best!— while four of Saturn’s moons transit the disk of the ringed planet in view of backyard telescopes. Oh, and the Moon will be New, providing dark skies for anyone who wishes to see the show.
The Italy Gladiators had a warm-up game with Crossroads Friday night in preparation for their playoff game to be held on Monday night in West, Texas at 7:00 p.m. against Chilton.
Seniors Dontavius Clemons, Darrin Moore and Diamond Rodgers helped close the books on another successfull regular season of Italy Gladiators’ basketball. Head Coach Kyle Holley has his squad primed for the playoffs as they play Monday, February 23, for the Bi-District Chamionship in West, Texas.
The “Italian Globetrotters,” the Italy Gladiators JV boys squad, dazzled fans with a talented display of their basketball skills as they passed over top of Waxahachie Advantage 77-32 and ended the season with an exclamation point!
The IISD Board will meet Thursday, February 26 in the administration offices at 300 South College, Italy. Poll location, early voting preparation and the agreement of joint city and school board elections will be considered. There will be two, 2-year term board trustee positions up for election. Other items on the agenda include review of 2009-2010 school calendar and contract renewals for Director of Special Programs, Principal(s) and Athletic Director. The meeting is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.
Meals on Wheels of Johnson and Ellis Counties have released their meals menu for March 2009. These meals are subject to change.
All area youth horse enthusiasts are invited to celebrate Ellis County Equine Association’s 25th Birthday and Anniversary on Sunday, March 1, at the Flying Dollar Ranch in Italy at 2 p.m.
On Sunday, February 8, 2009, the Ellis County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recognized seniors from each school in Ellis County. Tyler Boyd, son of Ricky and Monica Boyd, is the Italy High School student that was selected as one of the recipients of the award this year.
One of the newest members of the State Bar of Texas is Italy resident Keland D. Lewis. Nephew of Mayor Frank Jackson and son of Gerald Jackson of Italy and Doretha Jackson of Lancaster, Lewis worked hard to be where he is today with the support and endorsement of his family and friends. Perhaps not the first lawyer hailing from Italy, Texas but certainly a fine representative to watch.
The next regular meeting of the Italy Economic Development Committee meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 23. Agenda items include a sub-committee review of the EDC bylaws and hiring of an EDC professional. The Italy EDC will meet in the city council chambers behind the police station, next to city hall. It begins at 6:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The Italy Coliseum – The Italy 7th and 8th grade boys’ basketball squads ended their 2009 seasons with big shots, two well earned wins and a lifetime of hoop memories.
On February 12th Stafford Elementary students celebrated President Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday. Many students were dressed up as President Lincoln wearing white shirts, black suit coats and black stove top hats.
